In his book “Saducismus Triumphatus”, Joseph Glanvill presents an account of a group of witches, including the accused Elizabeth Style, meeting with the Devil in the woods in order to make wax
poppets, or figures, of their enemies, and have them baptised by the Devil. They would then, it was said, utter curses and pierce the poppets with thorns.
