The Devon Witches: "Beat the water, Trembles' daughter..."

 

 

 

 

 

Halloween provides a strong association with the idea of "the witch" in Western culture. In most countries, toys, masks and costumes are available everywhere, in the month of October.  Here, images of childish play are framed by text from the trial of Mary Trembles, one of the Bideford Witches, hanged in Exeter in 1682.
